Proyecto REMAS

Interreg SUDOE REMAS

Greenhouse gas emission risk management in forest fires

REMAS (2019-2022) is an Interreg Sudoe project that provides solutions based on scientific analysis to identify critical areas with a higher risk of emissions in order to focus the prevention, management, extinction and restoration efforts.

REMAS is working on transfering its knowledge to other competent authorities in risk prevention and management and to forest owners through technical training.

REMAS will capitalise its results in medium-long-term strategies of the EU and each country of the consortium in terms of adaptation to climate change, forests and carbon management, integrated into regional strategies to improve governance in the planning and management of the renewable natural resources.

The different components of forest systems, in particular the plants of the different vegetation strata and the soil, can fix significant amount of carbon through different processes. However, after a forest fire, the ecosystem releases the previously fixed carbon from the atmosphere.

Objetivos/ Objectives

To quantify the carbon emission risk, contained in forest ecosystems, into the atmosphere by forest fires.
To propose emissions prevention measures and improve the capacity of ecosystems to store carbon after a fire.
To include CO2 emission risk in planning strategies and fire prevention plans at the transnational level.

REMAS takes part of Axis 4 «Combating cilmate change», Objective 5b1 «Improving the coordination and effectiveness of instruments for prevention, disaster management and rehabilitation of disaster areas» and receives ERDF support of €1.35 M.
